Bear's Paw Country Club opened in December 1980 as the very first Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course in Florida, designed by Nicklaus in collaboration with Jay Morrish and built on 245 acres in Naples acquired by Ohio oilman John Murphy. The club's name nods directly to its famous architect, whose "Golden Bear" trademark has been part of the club's identity from day one, when Nicklaus himself attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside a field of touring professionals. In 2015, the membership commissioned Nicklaus Design to undertake a complete restoration of his original layout in time for the club's 35th anniversary, which included regrassing fairways and roughs, rebuilding all 18 greens and bunkers, installing a modern irrigation system and concrete cart paths, and refreshing the practice facilities and on-course comfort stations. The result is a beautifully preserved, tournament-quality course that honors its original design intent while delivering modern conditioning and playability. Today, Bear's Paw remains a tight-knit, intimate private club known for its rich Nicklaus pedigree, scenic Gordon River setting, and reputation as one of Naples' most enduring golf experiences.
